"I want comfort, elegance and performance from my pieces,"
says Barbara Barry, who recently added several pieces to her repertoire of furniture for Baker. The Los Angeles designer has again mined 20th-century design references to create case goods and seating that, as she says, "combine ageless design with modern lifestyles."
Take the new armoire. The flowing scalloped top, rounded pedestal feet and gilt star motif are reminiscent of the Art Déco period, but the four-foot wide piece is designed to accommodate a big-screen television. The sofaback étagère, with its stylish splayed legs, has three drawers below the open shelves for discreet storage, and the ottoman, with parchment-style leather upholstery, can function as a bench or a coffee table, as it comes with a versatile serving tray and a slatted storage rack below. "This ottoman is designed for multiple uses," notes Barry. "Put your feet up on it. Set a tray on it. Use it as occasional seating. This is an ottoman for all seasons and a piece all my clients need."
